Here is a quick and concise recap of the most recent altercation between Kurt Busch and fellow NASCAR bad boy Tony Stewart at Dover.

Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart are racing each other hard for a spot inside the top ten.  Neither driver seems to want to give and inch, so clearly, they were a little annoyed with one another.  Finally, Kurt Busch thinks that he has Stewart cleared, however, Stewart does not let up coming off the corner, hits Busch, and there it is…the reason behind Busch’s latest outburst.

Under the caution, Stewart brought his car down pit road for repairs, but little did he know that Busch was like a ‘hawk stalking his prey’ behind him.  Busch furiously pulled alongside Stewart’s stationary car, makes slight contact, and nearly hits Jason Lee, one of Stewart’s crewmembers, who was assessing the damage on the 20 car.

Kurt Busch was parked for the remainder of the day, and despite rumors that he would face a suspension, Busch was only deducted 100 Nextel Cup championship points, fined $100,000, and placed on probation for the remainder of the year.

Was this punishment just?  On message boards all over the worldwide web, fans are incensed.  They feel as if Busch should have been suspended for at least one race.  His actions were inane, and a one-race suspension would not have been surprising.  In fact, it would have sent a stern message to the rest of the garage- use your car as a weapon, you can watch the race from the comfort of your own couch.

I am torn on the discipline that was handed to Busch.  Yes, a suspension would have been justified, but losing 100 points, dropping him from 11th to 18th in the NASCAR Nextel Cup championship standings, was pretty severe, much more severe than it may appear to the casual fan.  Busch will have a difficult time climbing back into that top 12.  When it is all said and done, his punishment could be missing out on the Chase for the Championship.
